IH 856
|
Picked up a nice 856 with an M&W turbo. My first question is anyone pulling these? if so are you running farm stock ,hot ect.?
Does anyone if the m&w kit come with the oil squirters . Will these motor handle any mods or should I look for a DT407 |

If you are serious about pulling, you can use an 856, but I would find a DT407 block or have the cooling jets installed in the block you have. Some 407 blocks are better than others. A C1 block is not worth using in a performance application. A C2, C3, or C4 block would be best. A dt407 will compete in a farm stock class. A 407 will be harder and more expensive to build than a 400 series IH. |

Where will I find the info to determine what block I have? how can I tell if the cooling jets are installed, did they come with the M&W kit? |

400 series IH? Are you referring to the DT414,436,466? |

The piston oil cooling jets were not part of the M&W kit for the 361/407 engines. The block casting number is on the left hand side of the block, right below the front tappet access cover. The casting number should read 670000CX, the X being either a 1, 2, 3, or 4. |

thanks im gonna check my block, but it sound like a DT407 out a 1256,1456 is the smartest way to go? |
Re: IH 856

I tore my 856 down for overhaul and it had cooling jets from the factory. I asked about them at my dealer, and the shop foreman told me that the 856s had them from the factory. I just went with it, but I didnt ask anyone else |

Late 806's and all 856's and early 1206's had single oil squirters and late 1206's 1256's and 1456's had twin squirters according to IH and I&T shop manuals |

Have seen 856 with and with out. later built ones probably had dt parts.
One could guess that at some point in time, they just put the block stuff the same when going down the assy. line. |

My block is a C4 block. My plan was to remove the M&W turbo and install IH 1256 or 1456
manifolds, thinking this will give me more freedom to try turbo set ups. Anyone have any better set ups? Pumps, I was gonna have the pump and injectors rebuilt/moded. Should I look for a 1456 pump and injectors. Anyone know of a company that is good on staynedine fuel systems? |

Are you interested in selling the M&W Turbo? If so how close are you to southern WI |

You have the best block there is. I would try to find a 1206 manifold because they have the larger turbo mount flange. They have a T4 flange and a 1256 or 1456 has a T3 flange. You do not want a 1456 pump. Your pump you have now is capable of more fuel output than a 1456 pump. A T3 manifold would work but you wouldn't be able to mount the common 3lm-466. |

THTF,
1206 manifold,3lm turbo ...check. found a shop that will mod my pump, they said the same thing about the 1456 pump. heads? should I be looking for a DT head? any advantage? Should I check ,and install all the cooling jets? |

The M&W turbo setup was designed to work with the stock 806/856 hoods, so no additional holes needed to be cut for the exhaust. If you go to the IH turbo setup from a 1206, 1256, or 1456, you will want a hood from a 1206 or 1256, or you'll have to cut a new hole in your existing 856 hood.
A 1206 manifold, with a 3LM turbo bolted to it, should be very close to lining up with the existing hole in the 1206/1256 hood for the exhaust. Some minor trimming may be needed, depending what exhaust elbow & spacer plate combination is used. A 1" thick spacer plate is needed to install a 3LM-466 onto a 1206 manifold, sandwiched between the manifold & the turbo, in order to raise the turbo high enough so that the compressor housing of the 3LM clears the thermostat housing of the DT407. That is something else to bear in mind. With a M&W turbo setup, the original D407 thermostat housing for the 856 was still used. If you add an IH turbo setup from a 1206/1256/1456, you need to replace the thermostat housing as well with one from a 1206/1256/1456. I have seen C4 blocks in 856's have all 12 piston cooling jets in them already. Many of the early 856's that came out had a C1 block in them originally. IH had an "as fail" recall on the C1 blocks, which would usually result in them being replaced at a dealership with either a C3 or a C4 block. If yours is an early serial numbered 856 tractor with a C4 block, the odds are very good that yours was one of the "recall" tractors that had a C1 block fail & had it replaced. Many, if not all of the replacement blocks had all 12 oil nozzles in them, as is nearly impossible at the factory to know if the replacement block was destined for an 856, or a 1256. |

no sure what you are looking for. or how much you are looking to spend. but i have a 450 roosamaster pump with lines and injectors. also have a 407 motor. that has been stroked out to 456. if your interested in anything let me know. (815)878-8898 jake |

1206 Restorer.
I will be but probably not till winter when the tractor comes in and goes under the knife. The best thing to do at this point is contact me this fall. Im located in NH. The kit is extremely low houred |
Re: IH 856

THTF.
exhaust plumbing, will the 1206 elbow work and line up with the hole in the hood? The tractor must already have a hood off a 1256, cuz the M&W lines up perfect and wasn't cut. Plan on running just a straight K&N filter removing the factory set up. |

What kind of HP can I expect from the d407 with the 3lm ,1206 manifold, pump, injectors, and air system opened up?
Should a clutch up grade be done? Can the stocker handle this set up? Should any cam work be done also? |

856 clutch is only a 12" clutch, so yes, an upgrade should be done, stock won't hold it. Don't mess around or skimp on safety, get yourself a SFI steel double-disc flywheel/clutch assembly. May be overkill performance wise, but you won't have to worry about it not holding, and you won't have to worry about the stock flywheel exploding because of excessive heat from clutch slippage. |
